Honestly part of the charm of Mission Beach is that it offers something for so many different ages and hobbies. Sure, you’ll find roller coasters and a few things that are geared towards children, but this beachy destination also has plenty of things for adults to get into, including some really cool bars and delicious restaurants.
1. Visit Belmont Amusement Park
Alright, the first order of business in Mission Beach (and sometimes the most obvious with the roller coaster on the horizon) is Belmont Amusement Park. This historic beachfront amusement park is a classic San Diego landmark that’s been around since 1925.
If you like the idea of being at a carnival-like atmosphere on the boardwalk near one of the most beautiful beaches in San Diego, I think this could be a hit. Add in fun games, small food carts or restaurants, and the exciting thrill of an amusement park, and you’ve arrived at Belmont Park.
This destination on the boardwalk has a pretty solid mix of things to do—from the classic Big Dipper roller coaster to the exciting and addicting games-filled arcade. Or, you can try your hand at the Tiki Mini Golf course. Up to you!
Admission to the park is free, all you need to do is buy tickets for the different rides or games in the park. Oh, and grab a casual bite to eat El Jefe for mouthwatering tacos (near the boardwalk) or some Dole Soft Serve for something sweet (near Tiki Mini Golf).

2. Walk or Bike along the Ocean Front Walk
Maybe one of my favorite things to do at the beach (outside of the beach itself) is to walk along the boardwalk. There’s really something magical about walking parallel to the beach with the perfect views of the sparkling blue ocean waters, breathing in the salty ocean air, and hearing the sounds of so many others walking around you.
I love the energy of the boardwalk. And Mission Beach Boardwalk, or what is known here as the Ocean Front Walk, carries that same energy and more! This paved path is about 2.8 miles long and runs from the Mission Beach South jetty to the south end of La Jolla (it passes through Pacific Beach). It’s about 5.6 miles there and back if you walk the whole thing and make the return trip.
You’ll pass small shops, crowded bars and restaurants, small beach cottages or condos, and of course the massive roller coaster at Belmont Amusement Park. There’s plenty of places to shop and eat along the way, so it’s not a walk you have to take straight through, you can wander along at your own pace.
Park at Mission Beach South (get there early for parking if you can!) and head out for a morning stroll, an evening sunset walk, or even rent bikes along the boardwalk to pick up the pace a bit.

3. Visit Seaworld San Diego
Now this one is generally a hit or miss with most people who visit San Diego. I mean you either love Seaworld…or hate Seaworld. And technically speaking, this spot is technically in Mission Bay (not Mission Beach), but it’s pretty darn close. Plus, it’s an experience.
San Diego life kind of revolves around nature and the ocean (how could it not?), and what better way to enjoy the ocean than to meet all of the different animals that call it home? You’ll have a chance to see dolphins, overly playful sea lions, and of course a shark and orca encounter.
You can also learn more about sea life with the interactive exhibits, or if that’s not really your thing, you can hop on one of the many rides at the park. There are rides for both adults and children so no one needs to feel left out. From the roller coast Electric Eel to the thrilling but completely soaking Journey to Atlantis, you don’t want to miss this place.
I hate the phrase there’s something for everyone, but honestly, there really is at Seaworld. Don’t miss out!
Tip: If you’re a real daredevil, check out Emperor, the newest roller coaster that also happens to be the tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster! Not for the faint of heart.

4. Visit nearby Mission Bay Park
If you’ve never experienced Mission Bay Park you’re in for a real treat. It’s 4,600 acres of beautiful green space and shimmering blue water. Naturally, given there’s so much space to spread out and enjoy the great outdoors properly, you have unlimited option of things to do.
With miles of trails, it’s a cyclist’s heaven. If you prefer being on the water (they call it one huge “water park”) you can rent kayaks, paddle boards, or even plan a day full of fishing or sailing. The bay is an incredible San Diego experience and, as per my specialty here, an incredible place to watch the sunset.
5. Spend the day at the Beach!
Okay, okay, this one is a bit obvious, but one of the absolute best things to do in Mission Beach San Diego is to go to the beach!
San Diego has miles of stunning coastline that’s just asking to be visited and relaxed on. Enjoy the day unwinding on the beach with a good book or in search of a tan. Or swimming, boogie boarding in the endless water. I will warn you though if you’re not familiar with the ocean water in California – the water can be a little (or a lot) colder than you’d expect. SO COLD.
Mission Beach is split into two sections or beaches – Mission Beach (same name as the neighborhood itself) and South Mission Beach. Truthfully, you can’t go wrong with visiting either, but there’s a distinct vibe at both.
Mission Beach is more lively and generally more crowded while South Mission Beach has a wider beach and is a tad more peaceful. It’s also popular among surfers.
Oh, and volleyball and over-the-line are popular games for a great way to stay active if you can’t sit still on your beach towel.
Pro-Tip: There are yellow and black checkered flags that let you know whether an area is for surfing or for swimming, definitely pay attention to these!
6. Go Fishing at Mission Bay Jetty Channel
Looking to do some fishing while in Mission Beach? There’s a great spot for that on the Mission Bay Jetty. Plus, an added bonus is that in California you can recreationally fish from a public pier or bay waters without a license!
The Jetty is located near South Mission Beach, the quieter of the two beaches in Mission Beach, and it makes a beautiful spot to enjoy a morning or afternoon of fishing. You’ll cast your line off the rocks and be surprised by local catches like massive Spanish mackerel, feisty trevally, or even Corvina fish.
No matter what you catch, I know you’ll enjoy spending time on the jetty!
7. Dive at the Famous Wreck Alley
If you’re looking for something unique to do in Mission Beach, you should check out scuba diving at the famous Wreck Alley. Many divers actually call it “Shipwreck Alley” as there are several sunken ships located underneath the water about 2 miles west of Mission Beach. It’s about a 15 minute boat ride to the diving spot, but it’s an incredible experience!
What started as the NOSC Tower getting head by a wave and sinking in 1988 soon became the idea of sinking other ships in the area for the purpose of creating a prime spot for diving. A couple of the other ships are called the Yukon or Ruby E, which are two decommissioned military ships.
Not only can you see the ruins of sunken ships, you’ll experience a world of marine life under the waters as well. Anything from California Spiny Lobster to Giant Sea Bass. If you’ve got a scuba certification, this is an exciting way to spend the day at Mission Beach!
8. Learn how to Surf
While in California, if you’re looking to learn how to surf, this is the perfect experience in Mission Beach San Diego. With several surf schools nearby, it’s a popular spot to learn such a fun and iconic sport. Why not catch a wave in the beautiful Pacific waters in true California fashion?
If you’re looking for a good surf school or instructor, check out Mission Beach Surfing School. They offer private, semi-private or group surf lessons with incredibly friendly and knowledgeable guides ready to get you up and going as soon as possible.
They guarantee you’ll stand up on your surf board during the first 90 minutes of your surf lesson, and all of the necessary equipment is included! That’s a pretty solid claim, so I’d take them up on that if I were you.
This is a great way to spend the day or afternoon and a fun activity for families or even those traveling solo.

9. Enjoy Craft Beers from Local Breweries
Big fan of craft beer, especially from local breweries? There are a couple breweries I recommend you check out while in Mission Beach.
The first is the most well-known, it’s called Draft South Mission and has a central location near the beach. It’s a great spot for a beer or a small plate or a burger (food is good!).
There’s over 55 local beers on top that are offered and outside seating offered. Overall, this is a great spot, it’s really inviting and has a great location. This is also a great spot to watch a Padres game.
The other place to check out is Amplified Ale Works Kitchen & Beer Garden. It’s located near the beach boardwalk but a little north of Mission Beach rather than central.
They have an awesome second story beer garden and serve great local beers – from hoppy to lighter beach beers. Their food is Mediterranean, so you can enjoy falafel while you sip down a beer by the beach.
10. Take a Bike Tour
What’s a better way to cover more ground and see more in Mission Beach? Bikes, of course.
One step up from that would be to have a tour guide who is familiar with the area lead you around. With Mission Bay located so close and the incredibly long and beautiful Mission Bay Bike Path available to ride on, there’s lots of ground to cover.
There are several bike tours in San Diego you can sign up for, electric or regular bikes for those who want the option. What’s awesome about this kind of tour is that you’ll get someone local who knows what they’re talking about and can help you see the area in a unique way or point out local landmarks.

11. Play Volleyball on the Beach
Nothing beats a day playing a good game of volleyball on the beach, right? There’s no better place to do it than Mission Beach in San Diego! Gather your friends and head down to the beach for an epic game of beach volleyball.
If you don’t have enough people in your group, people here are pretty friendly and open to a good game.
There are volleyball courts closer to Mission Beach Park and the central Belmont Park area, or you can check out the volleyball courts on South Mission Beach. The sand is soft and the courts are well-maintained. Get there early to snatch up a court, especially on weekends, since it can get pretty busy.

12. Have a Picnic at Bonita Cove
Bonita Cove is an absolutely perfect spot to enjoy a picnic in the area. Located in Mission Beach on the Mission Bay side of San Diego, Bonita Cove offers quite a bit. With large open grassy areas, picnic tables, palm trees, fire pits and volleyball courts, this is the ultimate BBQ or picnic spot.
There are also walking paths in the area to meander around the park as well as a huge play area for kids. The water at the Cove is shallower, calmer and a lot warmer than Mission Beach, which is a plus for many people.

13. Mini Golf at Tiki Town Adventure Golf
Mini Golf at Tiki Town Adventure Golf is the perfect place to have some fun in Mission Beach. Located at Belmont Amusement Park, it boasts 18 Tiki-themed holes. Each player gets to choose their putter and any colored golf ball they want.
Best of all, if you get a hole in one on the last hole, you’ll be rewarded with a free $5 power card to the Park’s arcade! Mini Golf is an affordable (and entertaining) outing for anyone, at around $10 a person, it’s great for families or even for a fun date!

14. Try Stand-up Paddle Boarding
If you’re looking for things to do in Mission Beach San Diego, stand-up paddle boarding is a great option. Paddle board at the beach for a bit of a workout with the waves, or leave the waves behind and opt for the calmer waters of nearby Mission Bay. Either way, there are options to paddle board for both beginners and experienced paddlers alike, and you’ll still get a good workout in both areas.
There are plenty of places in the area that offer rentals, including the Mission Bay Aquatic Center located at Santa Clara Point. You can venture out from this area or you can head to a local favorite spot called Santa Barbara Cove. This quiet cove has shallow and calm waters that make it the best kind of spot for paddle boarding or even swimming.

15. Visit the San Diego Zoo
Okay, the San Diego Zoo isn’t really at Mission Beach, BUT it’s a relatively short drive from there, and it definitely warrants a visit.
This 1,800-acre park is home to thousands of animals, including lions, tigers, rhinos, elephants and more. This expansive zoological park is home to more than 3,700 animals from 650 species and offers something for everyone. From pandas and polar bears, giraffes and gorillas, koalas and kangaroos!
There are also special attractions like a carousel ride around a small lake or an aerial tram ride through the African Rain forest. With its lush gardens, interactive exhibits, educational programs and more – there’s no better way to experience nature up close!
