Best Area to Stay in Tampa in 2024 (Hotels & Top Places)

Looking for the BEST area to stay in Tampa? 🏠

I’ve got you covered with this guide for the best areas to stay in Tampa, what there is to do nearby, any top eats, and best hotels.

As a former Floridian (yes, it’s a word), I spent countless days hanging out in Tampa. It was a favorite spot to visit at the time (there and nearby St. Pete) and a city I almost moved to!

With lots to do nearby, i.e. theme parks, top restaurants & bars, waterfront vibes, and much more, Tampa is a great place to visit. However, it’s definitely one of those places where you should have an idea of what you want to do before you pick a place to stay.

Hopefully this guide will help you do just that. Let’s dive into the best areas to stay in Tampa along with detailed information on each place.

👉 This hotel is my #1 pick for where to stay in Tampa – Located in the heart of Tampa, affordable, has an outdoor rooftop pool, and right near the RiverWalk!

What is the Best Area to Stay in Tampa?

This list is sorted by specific Tampa neighborhoods and what makes them a good place to stay or what they’re best known for.

1. Downtown Tampa: Best Neighborhood for First-Time Visitors

Walking along the Tampa RiverWalk under an overpass with the river nearby
Back in the day – strolling along the Tampa RiverWalk was one of my favorite spots – perks of being near Downtown Tampa.

BEST FOR: First-Time Visitors, Walkers |  🏠 BEST HOTEL: Hilton Tampa Downtown | ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~9 miles

Downtown Tampa is located in the heart of the city. It’s one of the best areas to stay in Tampa for anyone traveling here for the first time or really for anyone who prefers walking vs. driving everywhere.

Being that you’re in a central spot, you have access to many of the popular parks or museusms in Tampa by foot (or by bike, or however you like getting around). You’re also centrally located to other areas on this list including Ybor City, Channelside or even Hyde Park/South Tampa.

Maybe even one of the biggest perks is that you’re so close to the Tampa Riverwalk, which is the absolute best place (outside of maybe Bayshore Boulevard) to walk, bike or run with a great view of city and the river.

Plus, the popular Armature Works is close by, which is a food/drink hall with several places to choose from along the riverfront (another of my favorite spots in Tampa).

Note: Hotels can be a little pricey here, but if you’re after a walkable vacation or staycation, I would still suggest this area.

2. Channelside: Best Area to Stay by Amalie Arena

Amalie Arena in Tampa - Located in the Channelside area
If you’re staying in Channelside, head to Amalie Arena for a Lightning game!

BEST FOR: Waterfront Views & Lightning games 🏠 BEST HOTEL: Tampa Marriott Water Street  ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~10 miles

Channelside (also known as Channel District) is another of the best areas to stay in Tampa. Located just southeast of Downtown Tampa (some consider it to also be a part of Downtown actually), it’s another great central spot.

It’s home to a port frequented by boats and cruise ships and also close to Amalie Arena, known for the famous Tampa Bay Lightning hockey games. Yes, you absolutely should make your way to a Lightning game if you can, and this is a great place to stay if you’re looking to go to one.

The area is also great since it’s along the Tampa RiverWalk, so you have easy access to walking, running or biking all the way up to Downtown Tampa area if you’re up for it. You’re still a close enough Uber or short drive to Downtown, Hyde Park or Ybor City from here.

Plus, there’s plenty of good food and things to do nearby, including exploring nearby Harbour Island or Davis Islands. For what it’s worth, I recommend staying close to Channelside area but not necessarily in it – so more Water Street in southwest Downtown Tampa.

3. South Tampa: Best Area to Stay in Tampa for Nightlife

A beautiful sunset on a street with incredible architecture & palm trees in South Tampa
Walking through South Tampa at sunset is magical – look at this beautiful architecture mixed with palm trees. It’s a vibe!

BEST FOR: Nightlife & Trendy  |  🏠 BEST HOTEL: Epicurean Hotel  |  ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~7 miles

If you’re looking for one of the best places to stay in Tampa, I’ll be honest in that I’m a little partial to South Tampa. I spent most of the time that I visited this city in this area.

It’s located just west of the Downtown area, and it’s a lot more spaced out. Having a car or taking an Uber here is a lot more common, depending on where you stay.

Two of the coolest destinations in South Tampa include Hyde Park and then the beautiful walking path around the Bay – Bayshore Blvd. This waterfront walking path is about 4.5 miles around, making it a great place to get out and active while you’re on vacation or to take in views of the beautiful homes along the road. I’ve also witnessed multiple dolphins swimming there!

South Tampa feels a lot more “neighborhood” like – but with plenty of bars and restaurants and things to do to keep you busy. Hyde Park Village is a bunch of restaurants, bars and shops – and it’s a great place to spend a day or an evening.

Another pro to South Tampa is it’s a lot more dog friendly than some of the other areas listed. That’s always a win in my book! It’s also a great spot for groups looking to hang out in the trendiest of restaurants or bars in the area.

🎟 Best Things to Do Near South Tampa

  • Shop & Eat at Hyde Park Village
  • Walk, run, or bike around Bayshore Boulevard
  • Explore SoHo (South Howard) Bars & Restaurants
  • Check out Oxford Exchange
  • CineBistro Hyde Park
  • Davis Islands (Beach and there’s even a dog beach)

🍔 Where to Eat

  • Edison: Food+Drink Lab

  • Green Lemon
  • Bulla Gastrobar

4. North Tampa: Best Area to Stay for Families

A rollercoaster at the top (tourist) attraction Busch Gardens in North Tampa

BEST FOR: Families & Theme Parks  |  🏠 BEST HOTEL: Hampton Inn Tampa North  |  ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~15 miles

Next up on the list is North Tampa. This area, located as the name sounds, is on the North side of Tampa. It’s a great area to stay for families or travelers looking to explore some of the major tourist attractions or theme parks in the area.

This area is where Busch Gardens is located, making it a top spot to call a temporary home while you’re visiting. It’s also home to another attraction – Adventure Island, Tampa’s largest water park.

I do have to admit, I didn’t spend a lot of time in this area back in my Florida days, but I also wasn’t a big theme park or water park kind of person, so if you are, this might be a good fit!

You’ll also find the Museum of Science and Industry nearby as well as the University of South Florida (USF) campus. I do have to warn you though, it is a bit touristy and you will need a car to get around as it’s not very walkable. Plus, many areas around Busch Gardens aren’t very safe, in my humble opinion.

Pro-Tip: If you find yourself heading to multiple attractions like Busch Gardens, the Aquarium, the Tampa Zoo, or even the Glazer Children’s Museum – grab the CityPASS. It’s worth it.

5. Tampa’s Rocky Point: Best Area to Stay by the Water

Chair on Ben T Davis Beach Florida - a popular beach near Rocky Point Tampa
Check out nearby Ben T. Davis Beach when you’re staying at Rocky Point in Tampa – it’s super close and a good place to hang on the water!

BEST FOR: Waterfront stays 🏠 BEST HOTEL: The CURRENT Hotel  |  ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~5 miles

While this area doesn’t have the appeal of being centrally located in Tampa or being known for its walkability factor, this is a great area to stay in Tampa for those who love being on the water.

It’s also located central to Tampa and Clearwater, making it a great in between spot for those looking to head to the beach and also to explore Tampa.

While there’s not a lot to do at Rocky Point, there are plenty of incredible waterfront restaurants, cafes and other places where you can enjoy the sunset or take in views of the water. Whiskey Joe’s is here, and it’s one of my top recommendations for people visiting Tampa (I feel like in writing this I realize how many favorite places I have).

Note: You absolutely will need a car here. Unless you plan on taking an Uber everywhere or are staying in a hotel that offers a shuttle to some of the nearby areas – although many spots might be out of range.

A Malyan Tiger at the Tampa Zoo in the Seminole Heights area

BEST FOR: The Zoo or Craft Beer Lovers  |  🏠 BEST PLACE TO STAY: This VRBO with Pool  |  ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~11 miles

If you’re looking for a trendy area to stay in Tampa, look no further than Seminole Heights. This area is located north of Downtown and just south(ish) of North Tampa. It’s a great destination for anyone looking to be in the up and coming type of neighborhood vibe.

This area has lots of historic bungalows and Victorian styled homes, galleries, boutiques, vintage shops, and much more. It’s a great place where it’s still a neighborhood kind of vibe but with plenty to do. There’s even a cool spot to catch some live music. If you’re into the craft beer or street art scene, it’s also a great location for that.

Oh, and did I mention that Lowry Park Zoo is located here? So if you’re interested in the Zoo and want to stay nearby, this is the perfect area. Lots of families are in this area but also it’s a great up and coming spot for the younger crowd.

You’ll definitely need a car to get around though! The main streets are mostly walkable but still further away from other areas and things to do in Tampa.

Famous 7th Avenue in the Historic Ybor City, Tampa – Now designated as a National Historic Landmark District

BEST FOR: Culture & Food  |  🏠 BEST HOTEL: Hotel Haya  |  ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~13.5 miles

Ybor City is one of the coolest (and oldest) neighborhoods in Tampa. This historic district is bursting with character and charm, from the colorful buildings to the brick streets that transport you back in time.

And of course, no visit to Ybor City would be complete without exploring its rich cigar-making heritage. Known as “Cigar City,” Ybor City is home to some of the best cigar shops in the country, where you can watch expert rollers create handcrafted cigars right before your eyes.

But even if you’re not a cigar aficionado, there’s so much to love about this neighborhood. The food is some of the best in Tampa, with everything from authentic Cuban cuisine to modern fusion dishes that incorporate the area’s diverse cultural influences.

And with live music venues, bars, and clubs galore, Ybor City is the perfect destination for a night out. So if you’re looking for a neighborhood with personality, history, and plenty of character, Ybor City is the place to be.

Note: Ybor City isn’t near a waterfront and (just being honest) there are also some safety concerns around the area. Plus, it’s pretty noisy at night so it may not be a good fit for you if you’re after a bit more quiet.

🎟 Best Things to Do Near Ybor City

🍔 Where to Eat

  • Columbia Restaurant
  • Acropolis Greek Taverna – Ybor City
  • La Terrazza Restaurant
  • Casa Santo Stefano

8. Westshore: Closest Area to Tampa International Airport

The inside of the Tampa International Airport - one of the best areas to stay in Tampa near the airport is the Westshore area
If you’re looking to stay near the Tampa airport, Westshore is the perfect area

BEST FOR: Business Travelers & Near Airport 🏠 BEST HOTEL: Marriott Tampa Westshore  |  ✈️ DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT: ~4 miles

If you’re a hardcore shopper and love nothing more than a good mall, the Westshore area in Tampa might be a good fit for you. This neighborhood is home to some of the best shopping centers in the city, including the upscale International Plaza and Bay Street. And with so many restaurants in the area, you can easily spend a whole day here.

But while Westshore is great for those who love to shop and eat, it’s not exactly a central location in Tampa. You won’t find a ton of attractions or activities nearby, and the area isn’t particularly walkable. However, if you’re looking for a place to stay near the airport with plenty of hotels, Westshore is a good choice.

One thing to keep in mind is that many of the restaurants in this area are more chain-like spots, so if you’re looking for local food or restaurant scene, you may need to venture out. But, hey, if you’re a fan of classic American fare and don’t mind the occasional chain, you’ll find plenty to love here.

So if you’re looking for a place to stay that’s all about convenience, Westshore is the way to go. Just don’t expect to be in the heart of the action – you’ll need a car to get around and explore this area and other nearby spots.

🎟 Best Things to Do Near Westshore

  • International Plaza and Bay Street

Best Tips for Staying in Tampa

If you’re looking for some tips for visiting Tampa, here you go. Some of these are weather related, some are just general but hopefully they’re helpful for planning.

  • Tampa weather is somewhat predictable but also not at all – wear layers, and in the summer expect there to be rain in the afternoons. Summers are incredibly hot and humid!
  • Expect Traffic – Tampa has some of the worst traffic in Florida, especially during rush hour. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go.
  • Check out the local music scene– Tampa has a thriving music scene, with several live music venues and festivals throughout the year. Check out places like The RITZ Ybor, The Orpheum, or Jannus Live for some great shows.
  • Learn about the local history- Tampa has a rich history, from its Native American roots to its Spanish and Cuban influences. Consider visiting the Tampa Bay History Center or taking a historic walking tour to learn more.
  • Get to know the local cuisine- Tampa is known for its Cuban and Latin-inspired cuisine, as well as fresh seafood. Be sure to try some of the local favorites like Cuban sandwiches, black beans and rice, and fresh grouper.
  • Explore Tampa’s waterways!- Rent a kayak, paddleboard, or even a water bike to get out on the Hillsborough River or Tampa Bay. It’s a great way to see the city.
  • Make reservations! – Tampa is known for having some amazing restaurants, and it’s not uncommon for wait times to be on the longer side. To avoid long waits or disappointment, it’s always a good idea to make reservations in advance.
